United Airlines today celebrated 25 years of serving London Heathrow. In marking the 25th anniversary, United’s check-in area at Heathrow Terminal 2 was decorated for the occasion and a barber shop quartet entertained customers. Heathrow Airport Limited presented Arvind Garcha, United’s Director of Airport Operations Heathrow, and her team with a cake to congratulate them on a quarter-century of service at the airport. United’s first scheduled flight to Heathrow, a Boeing 747 aircraft from Washington, D.C., landed on April 4, 1991, followed by flights arriving from New York/JFK, San Francisco and Miami later that day.
Since then United, which now operates up to 17 flights per day from Heathrow to six of its U.S. hubs -- Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco and Washington, D.C./Dulles -- has carried over 42 million customers on more than 233,000 flights to and from the airport.“
We are very proud to mark 25 years of successful operations at Heathrow,” said Bob Schumacher, United’s Managing Director Sales U.K. & Ireland. “I would like to thank everyone on the United team for their dedicated service to our customers here over the past quarter-century. From our home at the new Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal, we look forward to a bright future at one of the most important airports in our global network.” Chief Executive of Heathrow, John Holland Kaye said: “We are delighted to be sharing this milestone with United Airlines.
United Airlines has been an important part of making Terminal 2 such a success - we look forward to working with them to give passengers at Heathrow the best airport service for the next 25 years.”The Heathrow milestone comes in the same week as United’s 90th birthday. The airline operated its first flight from Pasco, Washington, to Boise, Idaho, on April 6, 1926.
